Mirek is a flight instructor. He was teaching for 32 years on both gliders and planes. He trained many pilots working for commercial carriers, medical service and army as well as record holders and champions both from Poland and abroad. He spent thousands of hours in the air. He was honored as a Champion of Sport and received many recognitions both from the state and from specialised organisations.
Life led him to Gabon in Africa where he was to work for a commercial carrier. However, on June 25 2007, soon after his arrival and before he could take his first flight, he was knocked down by a truck from a municipal waste disposal company on a zebra crossing in Liberville. Mirek was hit from behind in a calf and a left thigh. Afterwards, the rear wheels of the car drove over the lying man, crushing his foot and beaking his shin in three places. The driver ran away without helping the injured. Strangers helped to transport Mirek to hospital where the first operation took place. Unfortunately, complications soon appeared and Mirek had to be airlifed to a Polish hospital. Hovewer, his leg could not be saved and had to be amputated above the knee to save the man's life.
Regretfully, additional circumstances appeared that made further existance difficult. As a result, Mirek, who is not liable to any damages for the loss of health, lives alone and only receives PLN 444, whereas the necessary rehabilitation and an artificial limb, which would allow him to become independent again and to go back to his profession of flight instructor, costs a lot.
Thank-you note
I would like to thank all those kind-hearted people who supported me in 2007 by donating their time, attention and money. They gave me a moral boost and helped me believe that one day I will be able to purchase an artificial limb (C-Leg) which would allow me to come back to my work as a flight instructor.
I would like to thank:
Aleksandra Kieres, the head of the Foundation- for her care, for creating a subaccount for me and for describing my story on the website of the Foundation. Moreover, I would like to thank for inviting me to a stay in a health resort in Darłówek. I also thank the others who stayed in Darłówek with me for the unforgettable moments that we experoenced together.
Lech Sielicki- for his help and for making the first donation.
Ireneusz Jędrzejowski- for substantial doantions, moral help and constant contact on-line.
The Board of KGHM "Polska Miedź" S.A in Lublin for financial support to me as their former employee.
Aero club "Aeroklub Zagłębia Miedziowego" in Lublin- for financial support.
The journalists writing for "Żurawie", especially Grażyna Hadler for her professional attitude, careful proofreading and for finding a place in the already overloaded issues of PLL "LOT" magazine for my plea for help (January 2008, issue no. 1 and 2).
The journalists writing for "Przegląd Lotniczy", in which case I would like to thank the editor-in-chief Krzysztof Krawcewicz for publishing the article about my accident written by Daniel Nowik. The article was published gratuitously in the 2/2008 isssue.
Special thanks to:
my fellow PLL "LOT" pilots Janusz Chrzan, Kazimierz Faryniarz, and Lech Kasprowicz for writing a recommendation in "Żurawie" and for asking the members of other PLL "LOT" crews to donate 1% of their tax
all those who donated 1% of their tax: pilots working for PLL "LOT", other pilots, colleagues, friends, their families and all the kind-hearted people (65 of them anonymous) who donated PLN19,757.61.
I would also like to thank:
Bożena Demczenko and Ryszard Kląskała for their constant help (also financial) and understanding; Ryszard Aszurkiewicz- my "new life" started from his "impossible" actions Leszek Siemaszko for his substantial help, Municipal Welfare Centre in Lublin and all those whom I remember and need. I simply could not live without you!
We managed to raise PLN31,328.77. Thank you for that but as the artificial leg costs even more I'm afraid that I have to ask for more. But we will manage.
