In 1994 Eugeniusz went to Italy to earn money to support his wife and three little children. Unfortunately, after an accident it is him, the former breadwinner, that requires constant help from his nearest and dearest. On August 7, 1994, in Rome, he was knocked out by a speeding car while he was crossing a street on a green light. He spent 4 months in a hospital at a reanimation ward where his respiration had to be constanly supported. After he woke up from coma he was moved to the surgery ward and finally, in April 1995, with his health ruined, he was transported to a hospital in Poland.

The damages granted by the Italian insurance covered only the costs of the bedsore treatment and other necessary surgeries. Eugeniusz's legs ae still paralysed and he suffers from paresis in both hands. His bedsores diminished but their recurrence hampers the rehabilitation considerably. Moreover, the PLN 677 a month of disablity benefit for a family of 5 is not enough to cover the cost of treatment, rehabilitation and the purchase of orthopaedic equipment.
