In 1989 Stanisław, a soldier, was pushed out of a speeding train by drunk hooligans. As a result of the injuries he suffered he had to have his both legs amputated.
Artificial limbs cost PLN 36 000 and the family cannot afford them. Both Stanisław and his wife, who raise an 8-year-old daughter, receive a disability benefit amounting to PLN 2061 a month. This sum is largely spent on medications and treatment, with hardly any possibility to save for the equipment necessary to  ensure normal life for Stanisław.
