Helena is a disabled pensioner. In the past she was able to make the ends meet by combining the meagre disability benefit received from the Social Insurance Institution with the money she earned. However, on January 8, 2001 she was knocked down by a car while she was crossing a street on a green light. As a result she suffered serious injuries to her head and body, which caused numerous general complications persisting until today. Moreover, due to a prolonged treatment she was laid off, which worsened her financial situation considerably because the PLN 523 of the disability benefit that she receives is not enough to satisfy even the costs of basic needs, let alone treatment and rehabilitation.
