Tomek used to work for a transport company and it was during work that he was crushed by a part of a semi-trailer in October 2004. He was transported to a hospital in a critical condition. He suffered numerous cranium fractures afffecting eye socket walls, cheeckbone, tooth socket and bones of the nose. Moreover, the cervical segment of his spine and his chest suffered such injuries as: complex vertebra fracture, spinal cord oedema combined  with an intrathecal haematoma, quadriparesis, rib fractures, injuries to both lungs combined with a bleeding to pulmonary cavities.
These injuries turned Tomek into a seriously disabled person and caused a prolonged and potentially lethal illness.    
After many surgeries and long rehabilitation in specialised hospitals his health improved in many aspects. Tomek can now, with a help from his therapist, sit without problems and stand for a longer period of time than before. Moreover, his left hand recovered part of its former functions.
At the moment Tomek's rehabilitation focuses on allowing  him to use a wheelchair, using his left hand more efficiently and making him able to cater for his basic needs. The rehabilitation costs PLN6,620 a month whereas he only receives PLN820.98 of disability benefit and attendance allowance a month.
